Watch: How to winterize your sprinklers, the Broomfield video Greeley’s water department shares before the first freeze

Greeley usually gets its first freeze in October, and the city’s water department points residents to a sprinkler winterizing video made by the City and County of Broomfield.

Greeley usually gets its first freeze in October, according to the city’s water department, and a sprinkler system that still has water in the lines can be damaged when that happens. The department’s winterizing checklist embeds a how-to video on the topic made by the City and County of Broomfield, which makes it a useful watch for anyone on the Front Range who plans to shut down a system this month.

What the City of Greeley page says

  • Timing: Greeley recommends that residents stop watering lawns and winterize sprinkler systems in mid-October.
  • Doing it yourself: the air compressor should be set no higher than 70 psi and should be able to deliver at least 100 cubic feet per minute. The page says higher pressure can damage valves, lines and heads.
  • Backflow assembly: shut-off valves and test ports should be left turned at a 45-degree angle so they do not freeze and burst over the winter.

The same page advises disconnecting and draining outdoor hoses, and hiring a company for the blowout if the process feels uncomfortable. The full checklist is on the City of Greeley water and sewer page. Broomfield lists the video with its other water conservation how-to videos on its Landscape Watering Tips page.
