The Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden opens its gates for free on Thursday, Oct. 1, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (grounds and exhibits are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.). The 15-acre rail yard holds more than 100 locomotives and cars, a roundhouse and a garden railway, which makes it one of the best weekday outings for preschoolers and homeschool families in the metro.
One rule matters: after overcrowding at a 2025 free day, the museum now requires every visitor to reserve tickets online in advance, including free general admission. Train rides are extra and also sold ahead, $5 for adults and $2 for ages 2-17.
