For anyone who cannot make it on a Sunday morning, Saint John’s Cathedral in Denver offers a different kind of service at the end of the day. The Wilderness meets every Sunday at 5 p.m. in the cathedral nave. The next one is Sunday, Oct. 18.
The cathedral describes it as an evening service built around seasons, each with a single phrase, image or theme. A guild of volunteers works with clergy and staff to set up prayer stations, and the hour includes incense, original music and visuals, and liturgical texts both new and ancient. Worshipers are given room to look inward and try different prayer exercises. The cathedral calendar listed the Oct. 4 service from 5 to 6 p.m.
