Wheat Ridge Cyclery tells its own origin story with two numbers: $4,800 and 750 square feet. That, the shop says, is what Eugene Kiefel started with when he bought it in August 1973. Kiefel had been a salesman of industrial bearings and, according to the shop’s history, was considering a career change after narrowly avoiding a couple of traffic accidents. His wife, Nora, and daughter, Leona, worked in the shop, and son Ron joined at 13 before leaving to race professionally. The shop notes that Ron Kiefel completed seven Tours de France and was U.S. national road champion in 1983 and 1988.
What they do
Today the shop works out of what it describes as a 30,000-square-foot facility, selling bikes, parts, apparel and accessories, with repair service and bike fitting. In April 2021, David Dentry acquired the business from the Kiefel family, which the shop calls a new chapter in its history. It also has stores in Ken Caryl and Parker.
