The Cupboard has been a Fort Collins kitchen store since 1972. Its website says founder Carey Hewitt started the business that year and that his son, Jim, now owns it, which makes it a second generation family shop.
It did not begin as a kitchen store. According to the site, the small original shop carried baskets, pottery and a few kitchen tools, and its first sale was three wooden spoons. Customers kept asking for more for the kitchen, so the store followed them, and it has expanded three times since. The site also says most of the staff have worked there for more than 10 years, with the longest tenure at 35, and that staff members decide what to order and how to display it.
What they do
The Cupboard is a kitchen and home store: cutlery, kitchen tools, specialty foods and home decor. Services listed on the site include professional knife sharpening, complimentary gift wrap, custom gift baskets, shipping and a gift registry. The About page adds that the store supports hundreds of nonprofit organizations each year and has for years paid its staff to ride their bikes to work.
