Denver Botanic Gardens runs guided, two-hour homeschool programs at its Plains Conservation Center, a stretch of shortgrass prairie in southeast Aurora, and the October session is built for the season: Creepy Crawlers of the Prairie, Thursday, Oct. 15 from 10 a.m. to noon. Kids ages 5-12 examine biofacts and specimens to learn how spiders, insects and snakes are adapted to prairie life and what they do for the ecosystem.
The price is $18 per participating child ($16 for members), and one adult per child comes free. Extra adults and non-participating siblings age 3 and up are $7 each. Advance registration and prepayment are required, and programs can be modified for weather. The next dated session is Thursday, Nov. 19: Cooking on the Wood Burning Stove, where families make an 1800s meal in the sod village, at $20 per child ($18 members) with morning and afternoon options.
