Before hardware stores, a farm made and mended its own iron. On Friday, Oct. 16, from 10 a.m. to noon, a blacksmith works the forge at Boulder County’s Agricultural Heritage Center west of Longmont, and visitors can drop by anytime to watch.
Boulder County Parks & Open Space calls the program Hammering on the Farm. Visitors can learn about the tools of the trade, including hammers, tongs, anvils and swage blocks. The county says registration is not required but is recommended. The center itself is listed as open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. that day, so there is time to see the rest of the historic farm.
The county does not label this a homeschool program. It is a weekday, drop-in look at how things were made, and it pairs well with a pioneer or Colorado history unit.
