Colorado Model Railroad Museum, Greeley: a 5,500-square-foot HO layout with group discounts for 10 or more

Illustration of families mingling in a lobby with a stone fireplace and mountain views

The Colorado Model Railroad Museum in Greeley is built around one very large operating layout: a 5,500-square-foot HO-scale model railroad, the Oregon, California and Eastern, inside a 10,000-square-foot building. The museum says the layout has 72 scale miles of connected track, took more than seven years and more than 40,000 volunteer hours to build, and opened to the public in 2009. For kids there is an Eye Spy game, a Lego area, a Thomas the Tank Engine play area, train simulators and a 1919 caboose. The museum says most visits take an hour to an hour and a half.

Admission is $15 for adults, $9 for kids 12 and under, $13 for ages 65 and up, and free for ages 3 and under. Tickets are sold at the door. Group discounts are available for parties of 10 or more, but they must be arranged in advance, and the discounted rate is not listed. The museum also offers private guided tours outside public hours.

A note for homeschool families: Not stated. The museum’s visit page does not mention homeschool, school or field trip groups. The rule that applies is the general group one: a party of 10 or more can get a discount if it is set up ahead of time. A co-op that wants the group rate or a private tour should contact the museum’s tours desk at 970-392-2934 or tours@cmrm.org and ask for the price before the visit. A single family simply pays regular admission at the door.
